Here you will get to know the accurate definition, qualifications, needs, and experience of becoming a legal assistant through the article.

Definition Of A Legal Assistant

As discussed previous in our blog titled "What is a legal assistant and what makes a good legal assistant", the definition of a legal assistant is someone who takes care of the backend support of the firm and assists those within the office in multiple duties. In this profession you may be required to wear many hats and take on a variety of different projects. If you are up for the tasks then this is the job for you!

In this role, you might spend your workday organizing the legal files, conducting research, clerical functions, handling scheduling, preparing the legal briefs, marketing the firm, assisting with invoicing and billing as well as many duties. All of these responsibilities are to support the attorney and/or law practice.

Qualifications

The qualifications of this position can vary per state and per firm. Some states require at least having a high school diploma or a GED certificate and experience previously at a law firm. Many firms look for experience depending on the case law. It can be easier, when applying for this position virtually, to expand your search catered to what qualifications you presently have and viewing the pay for each. If you find that more pay comes with more qualifications that you can begin the preparations to pursue the additional requirements.

Certificates

If you can be helpful, in most cases, to have a postsecondary certificate or an associate degree in legal or paralegal studies. Many firms will pay more based on various certificates, mainly a paralegal certificate, to the degree that we have observed in tons of fields. A notary certificate may be useful as well due to tons of firms not wanting to pay outsourcing fees to other notary publics. If they are able to employ a notary of their own this many boost your chances of getting hired. If you do not have any certificates at the moment, do not fret, if you express your willingness, desire or plans to acquire the certificate this may also increase your chances of getting hired when acted upon.

Experience

To become a legal assistant, depending on the subject of law, experience may or may not be required. Some law firm positions may vary depending on if the firm has the time, employees or desire to train. Many fast-paced law firms, such as personal injury or criminal law, may not have the time to train potential employees so this would be where you would see, on the job postings, the 5-10 years of experience is required. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule. The bottom line is that the experience required can very well depend on the law firm, position advertised and location of the firm. In general, as a legal assistant, required experience can vary anywhere from 0 - 10 years.

Knowledge

As a legal assistant it would benefit you greatly to have some sound knowledge of all the legal terms said and sued in law firms. To obtain this role, depending on the firm, it could shift the confidence and trust your employer has for you to to settle and excel in this role if you have a foundation of knowledge in the area tailored to your position. Some good ways to go about this can be through additional education, training courses, youtube videos, watching previous court trials, researching case law or even catering your social media algorithm to observe attorneys and what they talk about in their videos.

What Does It Take?

Consequently, to be a legal assistant, it can take passion, desire, determination, willingness, the ability to adapt, confidence and much more to successfully embark on this journey. Everyone's path is different but the bottom line is this is a key and vital position to build the foundation of support for attorneys in every aspect of law.
